Overview

In this unit, you will explore concepts of gender and sexuality in Europe and Asia, using comparative methods. You will consider how these concepts have developed distinctly in each sphere, how colonisation and globalisation have influenced gender and sexuality, and how you can analyse these concepts in a comparative frame. In particular, you will engage with contemporary case studies and examples of complex developments in gender and sexuality discourses in select sites of Asia and Europe in order to critically evaluate their respective positions and perspectives, their areas of overlap and their specificities. You will examine how concepts of gender and sexuality intersect with the distinctive ideas of human rights and natural law in Asian and European conceptualisations.
