In this unit, you will explore how race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and disability are represented on screen and behind the camera in film, television, and streaming platforms. You will examine how the screen industries have contributed to our construction of these categories and how these constructions have changed over time. You will survey the history and evolving representations of diversity in screen media from the point of view of producers, audiences, and critics. Questions you will consider in this unit include: What does diversity mean to film and television audiences? How have screen industries responded to questions of diversity?
