Overview

Decolonisation--the process of attaining independence from foreign domination--is one of the central features of contemporary world history. It is understood to be both a political event and a socioeconomic and cultural process that can take generations to realise. This unit investigates the rise of modern decolonisation movements, the enduring legacies of colonialism, and the ongoing push for decolonisation in the contemporary world. Typically with a focus on Asia and Africa, this unit examines the period from the eighteenth century to the present

    Discuss major theories of decolonisation, and the various interpretations informing historical and contemporary analysis of decolonisation;

    Explain the ongoing legacies of colonialism, including contemporary decolonisation movements, and the significance of decolonisation in world history;

    Critically analyse a variety of texts, including contemporary documents, polemical literature and historical scholarship;

    Conduct guided historical research using relevant primary and secondary sources and applying appropriate theoretical concepts;

    Communicate ideas orally and in writing.
