Overview

The unit presents a survey of modes of narrative discourse in modern and contemporary literature. Through the close stylistic analysis of examples of short fiction, it provides an historical overview of key movements such as realism, naturalism, impressionism, and modernism, as well as postmodern and contemporary responses. You will investigate the devices of narrative, including techniques of focalisation and point of view, story-telling, and the role of narrative in a range of cultural contexts. What constitutes narrative? What are its primary features? How does story-telling communicate meaning? How do we construct effective narrative texts? The texts studied are drawn from a wide variety of genres and countries.
