Race, racism and social inequalities

ATS2716

Synopsis

Why does race, as a social construct, persist in shaping people’s lives? How does race and racism manifest in immigration contexts to produce social inequalities? You will take a comparative view on issues of race and racism in a context of global migration. The unit will 1) examine traditional and new geographical sites of racism; 2) illuminate racism beyond the White/Other binary; and 3) introduce new dynamics in racism, including intersectional factors such as nationality, class, and gender.
