Overview

In this unit, students will study the ancient Greek language. The unit is designed to bring students with no previous knowledge of ancient Greek to a level at which they can begin to read and enjoy ancient Greek texts. Emphasis in this unit is on acquiring grammatical knowledge and on building a good vocabulary. Students will learn the Greek alphabet and begin reading Greek prose of increasing complexity, with emphasis on the Attic Greek dialect spoken and written in Athens in the 5th century BCE - the language of Plato, Thucydides, and the great Athenian playwrights.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

This unit will provide students with opportunities to work with peers in groups and pairs in class. They will have interactive discussions to deepen your knowledge and understanding of the topic, and reinforce your learning.

This unit includes case-based teaching, where students apply their knowledge and engage in analytical and reflective thinking to solve complex contextual scenarios.  Activities are often designed so that there is not one clear answer, but students need to work together to examine, analyse and make decisions to resolve the situation.
