Overview
The unit explores the role language, particularly English, plays in globalisation. It examines a variety of social, economic, cultural, and linguistic implications of the spread of English and the emergence of Englishes past and present. Issues that are discussed include colonialism, globalisation, attitudes towards varieties of English, multilingualism and linguistic repertoires, the creative use of English in digital environments, language and identity, language commodification, and the relationship between the local and the global.
