Theatre and performance: Theory and practice 1

ATS2811

Synopsis

This practical, performance-based unit investigates the processes of making and theorising performance as intertwined and mutually influencing processes. The unit asks the question: How do theory and practice work together when we create and analyse performance? You will learn theories of theatre and performance and then integrate those theories in practical work. You will learn creative design skills (including lighting, sound, costume and set design, and stage management). You will then focus on performing and directing/dramaturgical explorations. This unit enables you to produce self-initiated performance work in creative teams. You will gain tools and strategies for working in collaborative teams, project and production management, and for documenting and evaluating your own work and that of others. As well as practical projects, you will undertake readings, writing projects, presentations, and performance documentation to demonstrate your integration of the theories of performance into your practical research.
