Overview

In this unit, you will be continuously introduced to written modern standard Chinese to students with a background in spoken Chinese. You will be provided with more training in formal grammatical structures and vocabulary to accelerate the development literacy and further improve your Chinese oral skills. Additionally, you will continue to gain a basic critical understanding of Chinese society, its values and their evolutions.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    recognise an additional 500 Chinese characters;

    write an additional 500 Chinese characters;

    gain an understanding of the basic syntax system of Modern Standard Chinese and of the similarities between it and English;

    acquire comprehension skills necessary to read simple modern vernacular texts;

    acquire basic Chinese word processing skills;

  6. 6

    further develop oral proficiency (approximates to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages A2);

  7. 7

    further acquire a basic critical understanding of Chinese society, its values and their evolutions.
