Changing history

ATS2884

Synopsis

What is the purpose of studying History, and how has the academic discipline of History changed over time? In this unit, you will examine the professional practice of History and the different approaches, theoretical preoccupations and philosophical debates that shape the discipline. You will engage with examples drawn from Monash historians’ expertise in the histories of Asia, Australia, North America, and Europe, in a range of periods. You will explore the influence of social, intellectual and political developments, e.g., decolonisation, feminism, and the linguistic, spatial and material turns in social and cultural history, global history and environmental history. By engaging with different perspectives on the past, including Indigenous and First Nations approaches to history-making, you will deepen your understanding of what it means to decolonise historical inquiry.

Sourced from the Monash Handbook 2026.
