Pre-requisites: Proficient 2 (French and francophone, Italian, German, OR Spanish and Latin American Studies) or equivalent knowledge.
Co-requisites: Students must be undertaking two European languages at a minimum of entry points 2.
Overview
In this unit’s cultural component you will explore transculturality and multilingualism in contemporary societies. In the language-specific component (French, German, Italian, or Spanish) you will explore related themes, while further developing language acquisition at the level B2 of the European Framework.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

critically read complex texts in the original language and in translation;

communicate effectively in one of the European Languages (French, German, Italian, or Spanish), using grammatical concepts and vocabulary at a level equivalent to the first stage of B2 of the European Framework.

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
This unit consists of: online pre-class activities, a one-hour culture tutorial, and a two-hour language tutorial. In all sessions you are expected to participate actively, engaging critically with the material. Culture tutorials are run in English, with students from all four European languages taught at Monash (French, German, Italian, Spanish). Language tutorials are run in the LOTE that you are specialising in.
