Pre-requisite: Must have passed 12 credit points of of Level 2 Arts units.

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Criminology must complete two first year gateway criminology units.

Overview

In this unit you will comprehensively explore hate crime through criminological, sociological, psychological and political lenses. You will examine the causes, manifestations and impacts of hate. You will engage with theoretical frameworks, empirical research and legal debates that help explain why hate crime occurs, who is affected, and how society responds. Key topics in this unit include defining, conceptualising and measure hate crime, the utility of hate crime laws, consequences of victimisation and the political uses of hate.
