Melbourne migrant cultures in contact
ATS3174
Synopsis
Melbourne has been home to successive waves of migrants since the city's founding in 1835. In this unit you will consider the ways in which migrant communities have established themselves in Melbourne and the cultures they have created as part of the evolving fabric of the city. Areas of culture to be examined may include food, writing, music or other areas.
By examining migrant groups in comparison and in contact, you will develop cultural literary as well as your analytical and communication skills. The multidisciplinary unit will include an experiential learning component during which you will reflect on the theories of intercultural encounters introduced in the classroom.
Sourced from the Monash Handbook 2026.
