Overview

The unit explores ways in which religious and secular ideas and interests clash, cooperate, interact and influence each other. It discusses models of secularization (freedom of religion, freedom from religion), as well as different models implied by the intersection between religions, states and politics (religious state/religious politics, secular state/secular politics, religious state/secular politics, secular state/religious politics), their  historical contexts, social, intercultural and interreligious conflicts and tensions they produce and governments' responses to them. Finally, the unit also looks at tensions produced by the religio-political discourses of inclusion and exclusion underlying domestic and foreign policies of nation-states.
