Overview
The unit introduces students to the key issues in language endangerment, an area of great current importance. How can we assess linguistic diversity and language endangerment? How do such assessments relate to the broader framework of the loss of biological and cultural diversity? What are the symptoms and causes of language shift? How do changes in domains of language use and patterns of language transmission affect speaker fluency and the degree of endangerment? These questions will be addressed through discussion of general principles of language change and examination of case studies from many parts of the world.
