Overview

This unit is concerned with the rigorous study of the sounds of language. The first part of the unit introduces the study of the physical sounds used in language, covering the principles of articulatory phonetics, their implementation in the International Phonetic Alphabet and the use of that system for the transcription of speech, and the basics of the acoustic analysis of speech sounds. In the second part of the unit, the mental representation of sound patterns in languages is the topic, covering the principles of phonological analysis and introducing issues in the theory of phonology.
