Overview

This unit considers the uniquely human ability: language. It explores what innate capacities humans must be born with in order to learn a language, how the forms of human languages relate to the cultures and environments those languages are spoken within, and the extent to which language and thought may shape one another.

We will consider big questions like:

  1. How can humans get an idea from one mind to another via language?
  2. In what sense is meaning located in language?
  3. Why are the world's 7000 languages so different from one another?
  4. To what extent do these differences between languages reflect and reproduce differences in culture, environment, and/or ways of thinking?
  5. How is language manipulated to shape people’s beliefs and behaviours?
