Asian languages advanced: Transnational intersections
ATS3946
Synopsis
Students expand their existing language skills by joining students of other Asian languages in an exploration of historical and contemporary contacts between societies of Asia. Students of Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese and Korean will study examples of intersections between these nations, creating dialogues about how intersections are given meaning in the culture of the language group they are studying. Students will share these meanings through discussion and translation with classmates. These dialogues will expand students’ linguistic capabilities in their language of choice, while the cross-border discussions will enhance critical and cross-cultural awareness of Asia. Students will create new knowledge about cultural flows and trends within Asia, growing their language skills as they learn about emerging and historical ties between Asian peoples.
