Overview

This practice-based unit provides you with an opportunity to test and explore theoretical and critical concepts introduced in other Film and Screen Studies units by taking part in the production of a short video group project. The unit is devoted to the practical application of the following key areas in screen media: editing, point of view, sound and image relationships, graphics and text. You build upon ideas and skills developed in the unit ATS2845 Screenwriting for media production to produce a high-quality, short video project. Time is devoted to looking at a range of videos/short films in order to think through a production's rationale and theoretical relevance. You are expected to work in small groups and to attain a competence in most but not all of the following aspects of video production: scriptwriting, production planning, filming using digital video cameras and lights, and editing and sound-mixing using computer-based digital video-editing software.

Learning resources

Required resources

A smartphone or mobile device with an on-board camera. This will need plenty of space available on it for media capture. Filmic Pro software should also be installed on this device. This will discussed further in tutorials.

Headphones (with a jack connect - not wireless/bluetooth): Earbuds will suffice but full over-the-ear, non-noise cancelling headphones are preferable.

Computer and media capture/storage: Access to a fast laptop or personal computer. This will need to have elements of the Adobe Creative Suite installed on it (Adobe Premiere, Media Encoder etc.). Access to this software will be provided by Monash during the semester. Details on how to install this software will be discussed in tutorials. You will also require a an external hard drive. This is for storing your media and editing projects. At least 500mb free space available for this unit with a fast connection such as USB3. Further specifications will be discussed in tutorials. One fast SD card for media capture using the MFJ cameras. This will be discussed further in tutorials.
