Requisites

Overview

This unit is a capstone unit in the Chinese Studies Program in the discipline of translation studies in the Chinese context.  It aims to provide research-based training for the purpose to prepare students for future career development and postgraduate studies.

The unit exposes students to scholarly accounts and media reports of the evolution of the Chinese language under the influence of translation since the birth of the modern vernacular Chinese in the early 20th century. Through the investigation, students will gain insight into the modern Chinese language and its use in a global context, focussing on the impacts of politics and popular culture on language evolution. Students will learn to critically analyse texts in light of pertinent translation theories.
