Overview

Should corporations be environmentally sustainable? To what extent should business organisations be ethical and just? To what extent should corporations have social responsibilities? Do managers have obligations to stakeholders such as employees and customers? This unit examines these fundamental questions by applying ethical theories. This unit will focus on ethical issues that arise in business organisations, which involve the 17 United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) relating to human rights, environmental protection, marketing and advertising, human resource management and social accounting.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    identify significant ethical issues that arise in various business context and explain the implications of applying different ethical theories for business enterprises

  2. 2

    critically assess the different approaches to corporate social responsibility

  3. 3

    apply different ethical theories and approaches to corporate social responsibility including issues specific to the environment, human rights, marketing, human resources management and social accounting

  4. 4

    propose innovative solutions to ethical and sustainability issues that arise in a business environment.

Workload and teaching

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. The unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
