Overview

Artificial intelligence (AI) and big data are playing an increasingly important role in all aspects of modern business. They are a key driver shaping day-to-day business process and decision-making. This two-week intensive unit is designed and taught by faculty and industry leaders at HEC Montreal. Taking both a theoretical and practical approach to AI and Data Science, including industry visits, the unit explores a variety of topics including the fourth industrial revolution, ethics and governance, and deep learning.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

    apply practical programming skills and theories of data science to real datasets

    use theories of data science through case studies and site visits to evaluate the impact of AI on the future of business and society

    acquire team skills including team leadership, collaboration, problem-solving, decision-making, communication and presentation skills

    develop reflective practice skills in relation to individual learning.

Workload and teaching

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. The unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
