Overview

Entrepreneurship is shaped and governed by prevailing institutions including important aspects of the law. It is critical that when starting and growing a new venture, entrepreneurs are both aware of and compliant with local and global regulations. This unit will cover key legal requirements relevant to starting, structuring and operating a business. It is important that entrepreneurs are aware of and understand the importance of contracts; operating a digital business; company law including the advantages of a company structure, duties and roles of directors and shareholders; intellectual property including trademark, copyright, patent and trade secrets protection to protect innovation; the different ways to take on funding from investors; as well as unique legal issues in frontier technologies. The ethical and compliance aspects of all topics will be examined. The unit offers you a broad overview of relevant aspects of the law to ensure legislative requirements are complied with and, by doing so, risks to any potential business are mitigated. It will also enable founders to seek the right kind of legal advice at the right time for their business.

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. This unit is offered by the Entrepreneurship Portfolio in the Business School and is guided by our four defining values:
Humble excellence
Elevated thinking
Meaningful action
Anchored in community

The core function of the portfolio is to help students develop an entrepreneurial mindset and the capabilities to bring this mindset to life. This means that throughout the unit you will experience ambiguity, moments of chaos and considerable uncertainty as you deep dive into the world of startups, entrepreneurship and innovation. You will be required to spend substantial time outside of class engaging with various stakeholders to help test and validate your ideas and solutions. Each unit within the entrepreneurship portfolio requires you to act, it’s not about sitting in the classroom, coming up with ideas and thinking you’re correct. You will at times be wrong! So, you will need to iterate, adjust and be willing to fail. This is what entrepreneurship is about, it will be hard but incredibly rewarding! If you are not willing to put in the work and give it your best, then this unit is not for you.
Technology Policy
This unit requires your full attention and focus at all times, if you are answering emails, texting, posting or scrolling during lectures and in particular guest presentations you will be asked to leave the class.
Word Limits
You will notice that there are some assessments with no word limits in this unit, this is because the unit is designed to prepare you for the real world. We may provide you with some guidance, but we will not spend time specifying how long a report should be, what font you should use or other bits of information that you, a young professional, need to learn how to judge and decide. Use as many pages/slides/words/pictures that are required to get your insights across in a clear and succinct manner.
