Workload and teaching
- Tutorials12 hours
- Lectures36 hours
- Teaching approachActive learning
- Teaching approachProblem-based learning
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. The unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
This unit will be taught by making use of a three-hour lecture each week, plus a separate one-hour tutorial each week for twelve weeks. Students will be expected to prepare for classes and will be tested on their preparation either before the classes commence (through Moodle assignments) or during class time.
Lectures will cover significant points of the topics (please refer to the detailed unit schedule), and lecture time may be used to cover a number of the set problems. It is not intended that lectures will cover every aspect of each topic, but rather provide a framework of the important theoretical concepts and practical issues. It is against this background that students are expected to attend lectures and participate actively. Students should spend additional private study time on the references indicated in the unit web site. Lectures are not a substitute for reading or independent learning and reflection. In general, you are expected to spend two to three hours of self-directed study (as a minimum!) for each hour spent in class.
Tutorials will be used to solve set problems and to allow students to raise and discuss relevant issues and areas of concern. The tutorial questions specified must be prepared in advance and, to bring the material to life, each student is expected to actively participate in and contribute to the discussion of the questions. The tutorials provide an opportunity for you and your peers to discuss the current topic(s) and to compare your completed assessment tasks with other students' work and/or model answers. While tutorials provide an opportunity for you to demonstrate the application of your knowledge and skills there is also an opportunity for you to ask the tutor to clarify your understanding of the topics and associated concepts covered to date.
Attendance at tutorials and performance in written work are regarded as important and are strongly recommended. Tutorial and class registers will be kept, and active class participation may be included in the assessment mark for the semester.
The Moodle site provides access to relevant material including past examination papers and model answers. These resources will enable you to develop a mastery of the topics covered by the unit.
To ensure a high probability of successfully completing this unit, students need to approach it in a systematic way. At a minimum this should involve:
- reading the prescribed material prior to the teaching session;
- preparing solutions to the set problems well in advance;
- attending teaching sessions and participating in discussions of problems;
- reviewing material from other references from time to time; and
- attempting all the set problems prior to the examination.
