Overview

This unit is designed to educate Master of medical engineering students about the anatomical structures and physiological functions of the systems of the human body. Students will be introduced to the structural and functional relationships of each system within the human body and how they work together to maintain homeostasis.

Throughout the unit, connections will be made to the real world connections, including engineering solutions, so that students can understand the relevance of the topics included in the unit to medical engineering.

This unit will be taught using a combination of online and face-to-face classes that emphasise the use of active and collaborative learning to promote student understanding and engagement.

  1. 1

Describe the cellular and tissue organisation of the human body and explain the inter-relationship between structure and function

  2. 2

Identify the structural components of the musculoskeletal and integumentary systems and explain how they protect, support and move the body.

  3. 3

Compare the functions of the endocrine and nervous systems and describe the underlying physiology that allows communication between body tissues and the environment.

  4. 4

Explain the interdependence of the cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive and urinary systems and how they work together to support life.

  5. 5

Compare the structure and function of the male and female reproductive systems and explain how they work to produce offspring.

  6. 6

Demonstrate an ability to reflect, communicate and work effectively within a team to collaboratively solve problems and plan/complete projects.
