Overview

The aim of this unit is to introduce and develop your understanding of multiple stem cell types, incorporating both historical and current research and clinical/commercial perspectives.

Four major themes will be presented:

i) Embryonic stem (ES) and induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells

ii) adult stem cells

iii) cancer stem cells

iv) clinical and commercial applications.

Topics within these major themes will cover both research and clinical/commercial aspects.

The practical component of this unit will present you with the opportunity to interact with leading researchers in the stem cell and regenerative medicine fields, explore the important ethical issues associated with stem cell research, and apply your knowledge to prepare a funding proposal focused on a stem cell project, as well as a major report encompassing all major aspects of the unit.
