Overview

The objective of this unit is to provide students with an opportunity to develop their employment-relevant critical thinking, teamwork and communication skills by producing scientifically sound solutions to an authentic complex pharmaceutical formulation problem. On successful completion of this unit, students will have developed a systematic approach to experimentation that includes the creation and application of their own suite of documents and scientific templates (assignments) that are relevant in all contexts involving new product development.  They will also develop the critical thinking skills necessary in making professionally informed decisions about the design of a scientific investigation, evaluation, analysis as well as in the interpretation and communication of results.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

Define a research strategy to find, evaluate and organise authoritative and relevant information needed to solve the problem.

  2. 2

Select relevant experimental factors to be studied to solve the problem and predict their impact on product performance (testing).

  3. 3

Master the use of the Design of Experiment (DoE) statistical tool recommended by current pharmaceutical guidelines by designing and testing an automated user-friendly professional program on MS Excel.

  4. 4

Design a precise experimental protocol to investigate selected factors' effects.

  5. 5

Conduct experiments according to industry standards to produce and test products

  6. 6

Methodically and systematically evaluate and analyze data using the DoE, interpret observed phenomena and relate them to the initial hypotheses raised.

  7. 7

Communicate scientific findings and conclusions, and propose relevant solutions.
