Overview
This unit will introduce students to advanced concepts and techniques in pharmacology and physiology that are critical to the analysis and understanding of drug action. A key component will be the application of allosterism and bias as effectors of cellular outcome(s), with emphasis on ligands with these properties as a new generation of therapeutic agents. The unit will also incorporate an introduction to bioinformatics, as applicable to drug discovery. In practical and theoretical projects focussing on cell culture techniques and cell-based assays, students will develop research skills by designing experiments and analysing and interpreting data.
Students in the unit will undertake a significant team-based inquiry project that reflects the role of drug discovery biology in the drug discovery, design and development process.
