Overview

This unit will focus on understanding the principles behind the formulation of nanotechnology drug delivery systems, and the way they behave in vitro and in vivo. This unit will cover the following topics:

1) Drug delivery nanotechnologies

  • micelles
  • emulsions
  • microemulsions
  • liposomes
  • nanosuspensions
  • cyclodextrins
  • lipid-based oral formulations

2) Characterization of nanoformulations

  • microscopy
  • internal structure
  • surface properties
  • drug encapsulation and release

3) Diagnostic applications of nanotechnology

Students will undertake literature searches and develop a proposal for a nanotechnology formulation to treat a disease or illness.

Students will also conduct laboratory-based experiments to characterize nanotech drug delivery formulations and to test their laboratory-based skills.
