Overview

This unit will assist students to identify the range of regulatory actors and their activities, including public enforcement agencies, civil society organisations, industry associations, enterprises and private individuals. The unit examines leading regulatory theories and their influence on the strategies used by various regulatory actors, and students will examine and evaluate empirical evidence of their effectiveness.

The unit will focus largely on Australian regulatory systems, but includes an introduction to transnational regulation. After exploring introductory concepts and theories of regulation and our regulatory state, this unit considers Australian public regulators and their strategies. This unit also explores the roles of private enforcement, in public regulatory systems and in private regulatory schemes, plus self-regulation. Also featured is an introduction to transnational regulation,and its influence in Australia, plus 'big data', artificial intelligence and the future of regulation.

Workload and teaching
