Overview

The unit begins with a series of topics that focus on the general overview of cellular metabolism in biochemistry. This is followed by understanding the structures, functions as well as chemical properties of important biomolecules that involve lipid and protein. Finally, a comprehensive study on the lipid and protein cellular metabolism which include the generation of energy from these two major dietary components from daily diet are conducted.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

    Describe what is cellular metabolism and how it affect our life in general;

  2. 2

    Describe the basic structures and chemical properties of lipid and protein;

  3. 3

    Describe the mechanisms involved in the storage and processing of lipid and protein;

  4. 4

    Describe mechanisms for control of metabolic reaction sequences involving lipid and protein;

  5. 5

    Demonstrate advanced laboratory skills by collecting, interpreting and presenting experimental data in an accessible and appropriate format.

Workload and teaching

  • Workshops24 hours
  • Tutorials12 hours
  • Laboratories18 hours
  • Teaching approachProblem-based learning
  • Teaching approachActive learning
  • Two 1-hour workshops
  • 7-8 hours supported independent study and
  • 1-hour of tutorial sessions per week
  • 3-hours laboratory per fortnight

Project/research/game-based assessments, and scientific writing will be conducted to enable you to demonstrate concept and apply critical evaluation in cellular metabolism.

Workshops – One-hour face to face or online workshop per week supplemented with active learning and in-class learning activities. You will be expected to undergo blended learning style by exposing to learning materials online (approx. 1-2 hours through Moodle) before participating the workshop session.

Tutorial classes - One hour of tutorial session according to the lecture topic. You are expected to participate in this session that involve various problem-solving questions. This will enable you to apply what you have learned during workshops in real life scenario.

Laboratory-based classes – Three hours’ practical sessions per week to develop proficiency in wet lab techniques, data analysis and report writing. The practical sessions are in parallel with the topics delivered in this unit.
