Students will examine the role of law and regulation in the context of sport and policy. Topics include the regulation of labour, unions and collective bargaining, performance enhancing drugs and negligence in sport.

    understand how legislation and common law regulates sports leagues, governing bodies in sport and the labour of athletes

    map the legal and non-legal regulation of major professional sports reviewed in the unit

    identify and describe contemporary legal issues in elite sport.

Workload and teaching

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. The unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week.
