Enrolment rules

E6011 Master of Professional Engineering - You are exempt from the prerequisite rule if you are enrolled in this course.

Overview

This unit will introduce you to the fundamentals of material and energy balances through a systematic treatment of single and multiple-unit operations, reactive and non-reactive processes, recycle and bypass, extent of reactions, equations of state, vapour-liquid phase equilibrium, solid-liquid phase equilibrium, internal energy and enthalpy changes for process fluids undergoing specified changes in temperature, pressure, phase, reactions and chemical compositions and computer-aided simulation of process flow diagrams. A process simulation software will be used to aid in the solution of more complex systems.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

Apply the basic concepts of conservation of mass and energy, including phase equilibrium, reaction equilibrium and non-ideal gas behaviour to mass and energy balances.

  2. 2

Apply the concepts of unit operations to combine them into a block flow diagram and process flow diagram of a chemical process.

  3. 3

Interpret physical property charts and diagrams to solve problems based on phase equilibrium, refrigeration and heat pump cycles.

  4. 4

Analyse the mass and energy balances of any chemical process, for both steady and unsteady state situations.

  5. 5

Simulate processes using a process simulation software to analyse the mass and energy balance of complex chemical processes and report the results in a technical report.

  6. 6

Interpret experimental measurements of mass, energy and chemical composition and report the results in a lab report.

Workload and teaching

  • Laboratories24 hours
  • Workshops48 hours
  • Teaching approachActive learning

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.

Teaching and learning methods
This unit consists of recorded lecture videos, workshop classes, computer labs and one laboratory experiment. Learning in the unit is mainly through the active and collaborative learning activities during the workshops, the assignments, and the report for the Aspen Plus process simulation and laboratory experiment. Before the start of each week, students are expected to watch recorded lecture videos, complete their recommended readings and take an online quiz. These are important background information for the workshops each week where learning activities are designed to encourage group work, problem-solving, critical thinking and sharing ideas. There is a group assignment to provide opportunities for teamwork. Aspen Plus is used to reinforce concepts and provide the ability to solve complex problems.

Computer lab allocation
There is a 2-hour computer lab scheduled each week commencing in week 2. Students must sign up for one computer lab session only using Allocate+.

Laboratory group allocation
This unit contains one laboratory – Mass and Energy Balances on Air Conditioning, to be completed during the semester. Students must choose the date and time they are available and enrol into a particular session by using the sign-up sheet on Moodle. Students not allocated to a particular laboratory group will not be accepted into that session without the written consent of the unit coordinator. Once a particular session is full (limit of 4 students per group), no more students will be accepted.
