Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

Relate the importance and applications of biochemistry in industry.

  2. 2

Design solutions based on principles of biochemistry for problems in sustainability and environmental contexts.

  3. 3

Describe the roles of water and cell components in the chemistry of life.

  4. 4

Describe nucleic acids and proteins in terms of biochemical properties and roles in storage and transmission of genetic information.

  5. 5

Relate the biochemical properties of carbohydrates and lipids to their industrial applications.

  6. 6

Relate the major metabolic pathway and the biosynthesis of primary and secondary metabolites of economic importance.

  7. 7

Work effectively in teams on group assignments.

Workload and teaching

  • Teaching approachProblem-based learning
  • Teaching approachActive learning

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.

Assignments related to the attainment of sustainability by biochemistry principles will be done in group mode via report writing and presentation. The team-based activities require coordination among group members, and they are required to work collaboratively and effectively in a team.

Hands-on sessions will be held in the laboratory to solve the open-ended complex problems using biochemistry lab skills. The lab activities will further strengthen your understanding of the theory learnt from lectures.

Weekly discussions will be held during workshop sessions to reinforce the understanding of lecture content. Prior to the online/physical sessions, you are required to complete the self-learning activities by watching the pre-recorded lectures and attempting the practical questions. The lecturer will also prepare in-class activities or set problems to engage students individually or in group mode.

Learning resources

Required resources

Generally, you must be able to complete the requirements of your course without the imposition of fees that are additional to the student contribution amount or tuition fees. However, you may be charged certain incidental fees or be expected to make certain purchases to support your study.

Technology resources

A faculty-approved calculator is permitted (meaning only scientific calculators that are not programmable and detailed in the list below will be permitted in the examination. These calculators must be checked by the faculty and have either a Faculty of Engineering or a Faculty of Science approved sticker).

You must regularly check Moodle for announcements.
