Overview

This unit introduces a range of sustainable engineering practices aimed at minimising GHG emissions across various carbon-intensive industries. The unit emphasises technologies with low environmental impact that support decarbonisation transitions of industry, including clean energy systems, carbon mitigation strategies, and energy efficiency improvements. You will explore diverse approaches of green chemistry, bioconversion, and circular design principles, along with the key considerations for selecting the appropriate technologies. In particular, the unit will examine emerging low-carbon technologies, including low-carbon materials, bio-based production systems, renewable energy, and circular economy approaches. You will also acquire techniques to optimise processes and systems by reducing energy losses and other forms of waste, and to transition the traditional industry processes into low-carbon alternatives. The aspects of carbon capture and storage will also be introduced to complement the broader application of low-carbon technologies.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

Apply the principles of low-carbon technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in energy and industrial systems.

  2. 2

Design low-carbon systems in consideration of economic, social and environmental factors.

  3. 3

Evaluate the engineering practice, efficiency, and sustainability of low-carbon technology applications.

  4. 4

Assess the integration of carbon capture, utilisation, and storage into low-carbon technologies.
