Overview
This unit has been designed for students who have demonstrated a strong aptitude for chemistry during secondary studies. On completion of this unit, you will be able to apply their understanding of the main chemical principles underpinning chemical elements, chemical reactivity and equilibria. A number of important topics including atomic structure, bonding and reaction stoichiometry will be developed to prepare students for a deeper exploration of chemistry. The concepts developed within the workshops are complemented through an extended laboratory program where you will have the opportunity to use a variety of analytical techniques and design your own experiments to solve a range of chemical problems.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Discuss the major trends that construct the periodic table of elements;
- 2
Interpret the relationships between electronic structure and bonding;
- 3
Apply the theories of thermodynamics, dynamic equilibria and chemical kinetics;
- 4
Recognise factors which impart polarity on molecules;
- 5
Foster the acquisition of practical skills by exploiting an inquiry-based approach to the chemistry laboratory experience;
- 6
Formulate hypotheses and design chemical experiments to synthesise and collect unique data using a range of sophisticated apparatus and technologies;
- 7
Apply recognised methods for interpreting chemical data;
- 8
Communicate chemistry, and discuss the social and environmental responsibility of chemists in the global community.
