Overview
This unit introduces the design of steel and timber framed structures in accordance with the design codes. It enables you to understand the process for the design of steel and timber structures and the background knowledge which leads to the development of the current steel and timber design codes. You will understand the behaviour of steel and timber structural components under realistic design conditions and relate the knowledge of design to practical design problems in a project-based learning environment.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Determine dead and live loading on a building structure.
- 2
Construct a model steel structure and predict its capacity in a team environment.
- 3
Describe the properties of steel sections relevant to engineering design for strength.
- 4
Determine steel and timber members considering strength and serviceability needs.
- 5
Determine steel and timber joints for strength requirements.
- 6
Identify issues related to timber durability following industry practice.

- Teaching approachProblem-based learning
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
This unit is delivered in a flipped-learning mode, in which content is supplied prior to the lecture through online videos. The lecture is then an active session in which the learning for the week is consolidated further by application to problem-solving..
