Overview
This unit introduces you to the design of structural elements in concrete, steel, timber and masonry in accordance with design codes. You will understand the design processes for various structural components and how the fundamental engineering science led to the development of the current concrete, steel, timber and masonry design codes. You will learn about the overall behaviour of structural elements including beams, columns, beam-columns, braces, and connections under realistic design conditions. You will relate this knowledge of structural design to practical design problems in a project-based learning environment.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Determine the dead, live, and wind loads on a building structure, and the relevant load combinations.
- 2
Analyse building structures for the load effects relevant for structural element design.
- 3
Explore and predict the behaviour of physical specimens of steel and concrete elements.
- 4
Design steel, concrete, timber, and masonry structural elements to the relevant Australian Standards.
- 5
Communicate engineering designs through calculation, drawings, and reports as part of a team.
Workload and teaching

- Teaching approachActive learning
- Teaching approachProblem-based learning
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-8 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
This unit is delivered in a flipped-learning mode in which content is supplied prior to the lecture through online videos. The lecture is then an active session in which the learning for the week is consolidated further by the application of problem-solving.
