Overview

In this unit, you will be required to undertake a research project from a number of topics offered. These topics in general include one or a combination of design, theoretical, review and investigation works that will make a new contribution to the body of knowledge. Experimental work is only permitted when combining with CIV4211.

You will be supervised by an academic member of staff. The project proposal will be presented as a poster, with the outcomes summarised in either a progress report or research paper and oral presentation.

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.

The research project consists of experimental work to advance scientific knowledge or test new approaches.

There will be traditional-style lectures, providing administrative insight into the unit. They also address aspects such as presentation styles for posters. However, the major part of the project is undertaken through a review of the state-of-the-art literature and critical discourses with the academic supervisor(s).

The library workshops are run to increase your skills in various aspects, notably on conducting a literature review, proposal and scientific paper writing, synthesising structured ideas from scientific papers
