Overview
Advanced methods for the design of structures considering both loading and strength aspects of design. Strength and serviceability design of continuous post-tensioned concrete members. Design and detailing of anchorage zones. Introduction to the plastic design concept for engineering practice, with particular reference to steel structures design; methods of plastic analysis from simple beams to complex frames. Introduction to yield line theory for reinforced concrete slabs; yield line solutions based on work equations. Lower bound solutions for reinforced concrete slabs using Hillerborg strip method.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Identify the collapse mechanisms of reinforced concrete slabs and steel frames.
- 2
Design and analyse plastically reinforced concrete slabs using Hillerborg method and yield line theory.
- 3
Design and analyse the steel-reinforced concrete structures using the strut-and-tie model method.
- 4
Appraise the ultimate behaviour of basic structures and materials with reference to the theorems of plasticity.
- 5
Assess the plastic collapse load of beams and simple frames using both hand- and computer-based methods.
- 6
Communicate professional decisions to specialist and/or non-specialist audiences.
Workload and teaching
- Practical activities24 hours
- Lectures12 hours
- Teaching approachProblem-based learning
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
The teaching style used in this unit is project-based learning, which allows you to have more flexibility in your learning. Details of the lecture/practice class schedule, the projects and assessment are provided in a separate handout which can also be accessed on the ‘Moodle’ site.
Both lectures and practice classes will be conducted for this unit. In the lecture, practical experience and existing good practice are emphasised and students are encouraged to ask questions any time during the lecture. Practice classes are important in full understanding of the essential principles given in the lectures. It is crucial that students attend the lectures before they can tackle practical tasks given in the practice classes. In most cases, tasks given in the practice classes will be assessed. Late submission of practice class tasks, home assignments and project reports usually will not be accepted.
Three class tests will be given during the semester to reinforce the concept gained.
There is one 2-hour practice class scheduled each week, commencing in week 1.
