Overview
This unit develops your understanding of contemporary topics in traffic flow theory and their applications. The unit introduces fundamental traffic variables and relationships and examines how they are used to represent both microscopic and macroscopic traffic flow conditions. Analytic techniques appropriate to the design and operation of traffic systems are considered for both interrupted and uninterrupted flow situations.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Describe advanced contemporary traffic flow theories and apply to solve practical traffic problems
- 2
Perform traffic data analysis methodologically
- 3
Apply analytical techniques in the design and operation of traffic systems
- 4
Evaluate the role of Intelligent Transport Systems in Dynamic Traffic Management
Workload and teaching
- Workshops12 hours
- Practical activities24 hours
- Teaching approachProblem-based learning
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 4-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-8 hours independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
The lectures are recorded and are available in advance of the practice activity sessions. Students are expected to have reviewed that material along with other resources on Moodle prior to coming to workshop. Lecture material will not be repeated in class although there will be an opportunity to ask questions if concepts need clarification. Students will then apply that material in a range of activities in the practice classes and through the group assignments. Students are expected to come to class prepared to engage constructively in the practice sessions. The main learning approach is active learning focussed on a problem-based approach which requires students to be involved with examples/applications of theories as proactive learners.
