Overview
This unit is an introduction to the principles and methods of triple-bottom-line evaluation of projects and policies in the area of civil engineering. As triple-bottom-line stands for economic, environmental and social requirements of sustainable development, this unit explicitly incorporates all three domains.

Workload and teaching
- Workshops24 hours
- Teaching approachProblem-based learning
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
This unit is delivered online via distance education. The main learning approach is “Problem-based learning” which requires you to be involved as a proactive learner in the projects and activities. There are no right or wrong answers to many of the project questions and activities. This does not imply that any answer is adequate. Some answers will be better than others as they achieve the criteria in a better way. Studying by off-campus learning has the obvious advantage of enabling you to study in your own time and when it suits you, while not having to commit to weekly classes on campus. At a glance, off-campus learning comprises viewing course material on-line and completing and sending set assignments prior to the due dates. In actual fact, off-campus learning is more than that; it requires self-discipline and accessibility to staff. For most students, an essential aspect, and an enjoyable one in a traditional classroom environment is contact with other students and the opportunity to learn from others' experiences and perspectives. The discussion forum used in this unit provides a key avenue for peer-to-peer learning as well as for interaction with the academic staff member leading the unit.
