Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Describe the fundamentals of subsurface flow and transport.
- 2
Design hydraulic tests to obtain basic aquifer parameters.
- 3
Derive analytical solutions for ground water flow and contaminant transport problems.
- 4
Model ground water flow, solute transport and variable density flow numerically.
- 5
Conduct model calibration, parameter estimation and sensitivity analysis.
- 6
Work both independently and collaboratively on complex ground water problems.
Workload and teaching

- Teaching approachProblem-based learning
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
In a flipped classroom setting, you will engage with the unit content through pre-recorded lectures and readings at home, allowing in-class time to be dedicated to collaborative activities, discussions and applications of the concepts.
This unit presents you with real-world challenges, requiring you to apply your acquired knowledge to devise practical solutions for these complex problems.
