Requisites
Before CIV6136
No prerequisites or corequisites besides the enrolment rules below.
After CIV6136
No unit lists CIV6136 as a prerequisite in the 2025 handbook.
Enrolment rules
You must be enrolled in the Engineering PHD program or with permission from the Faculty of Engineering. The unit assumes that you have the necessary foundational knowledge.
Overview
This unit covers advanced structural analysis techniques that can be used for different structural components. Matrix analysis and application of the finite element method for truss, beam and plate elements are explained. Yield line theory and strut-and-tie model methods are introduced for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures. An introduction to the plastic design concept for engineering practice with particular reference to steel structures is provided. The unit will also provide an opportunity for you to learn how to analyse a structure using computer packages such as ABAQUS that will be introduced to perform static analysis.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Apply the stiffness method of matrix structural analysis.
- 2
Appraise the theoretical basis of finite element methods such as the discretisation process, element formation and shape functions.
- 3
Analyse and design plastically reinforced concrete slabs using yield line theory.
- 4
Analyse and design the steel-reinforced concrete structures using the strut-and-tie model method.
- 5
Appraise the ultimate behaviour of basic structures and materials with reference to the theorems of plasticity.
- 6
Communicate professional decisions to specialist and/or non-specialist audiences.
Workload and teaching
- Workshops24 hours
- Practical activities12 hours
- Teaching approachActive learning
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
This unit is delivered in a flipped learning mode in which the content is supplied prior to the lecture through online videos. The lecture is then an active session in which the learning for the week is consolidated further by the application of problem-solving.
