Overview

Geochemistry concerns itself with the distribution and mobility of elements within the earth and its atmosphere. From the Earth’s surface to the mantle, water is a key medium mediating element mobility. This unit provides an overview of the fundamental chemical principles that control water chemistry and the interactions between water, minerals, rocks and life. We will apply this knowledge to understand, predict, and manage applied geochemical problems, including mineral exploration and geometallurgy; formation of ore deposits; radioactive waste disposal; applied mineralogy and environmental remediation.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

    Apply fundamental chemical principles to understand the water-driven distribution and mobility of elements in Earth systems;

  2. 2

    Be able to use complex numerical modelling software (the same used for example in environmental consulting) to predict water-rock interaction;

  3. 3

    Explain the different analytical tools that can be used to study geochemical systems and the information they deliver;

  4. 4

    Summarise your understanding of key geochemical questions;

  5. 5

    Apply the knowledge to analyse and predict the evolution of natural and engineered geochemical systems.
