Overview

Remote sensing is a rapidly evolving field and has a growing number of  applications relevant to the atmosphere; from monitoring climate important atmospheric constituents such as ozone and carbon dioxide, to increasing the accuracy of numerical weather prediction models and measuring air quality.

The main goal of the course is to provide an advanced physical understanding of the applications, instruments and retrieval techniques used in atmospheric remote sensing.

The lectures will focus on the underlying physics of interactions between electromagnetic radiation and the atmosphere, covering the spectrum from the ultraviolet through to the microwave.Topics to be covered will include satellite sounding of  temperature and humidity for  weather prediction models, remote sensing of aerosols, clouds  methane, carbon dioxide, ozone, fires and air pollution.

The labs and assignments will provide hands-on experience in using remote sensing data for atmospheric science applications and reinforce the information outlined in the lectures.

Offerings in 2021

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

    Describe the physics of interactions of electromagnetic radiation and the atmosphere;

  2. 2

    Demonstrate a broad knowledge of the range of satellite instruments used in atmospheric remote sensing;

  3. 3

    Contrast and compare the techniques used to measure atmospheric constituents;

  4. 4

    Gain valuable ‘big data’ skills through  analysing, visualising and extracting information from contemporary satellite data;

  5. 5

    Read, understand and critically appraise the scientific literature on atmospheric remote sensing.

Workload and teaching

  • 3 one-hour lectures;
  • 3 hours working on practicals, assignments, report and oral presentation, and
  • 6 hours of independent study per week.
