Overview
Remote sensing has become one of the important and widely applied methods for environmental and earth resource monitoring and evaluation. The information extracted from remotely sensed images may be used in many ways, e.g. as a basis for mapping land use/cover, for understanding environmental processes and for estimating biophysical variables. This unit will introduce the basic concepts and principles of remote sensing, and prepare you with image interpretation and digital image processing skills with an emphasis on the use of remote sensing imagery for vegetation, atmosphere, geology, water, soils and landform analysis.

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

To explain and apply the major concepts and principles of remote sensing and digital image processing for earth science applications.

To identify the types of information that can be extracted from remotely sensed data on the environment and earth resources.

To explain and apply the fundamental image interpretation elements (e.g., tone, texture, size, shape, pattern, site and association)

To visually interpret aerial photos and satellite images.

To conduct digital image processing and analysis using a digital image processing system to extract information.
