Overview
Working in close supervision with an expert in the field, you will refine your analytical and methodological skills to understand, explore and address some of the key problems and challenges in Earth Science and propose an innovative solution based on your own research.
After completing an extensive literature review on your research topic you will develop a plan to carry out the proposed research. This may also include the collection, interpretation and reporting on preliminary data.

Learning outcomes
When you finish this unit, you should be able to:
- 1
Analyse and explain key concepts and principles that underpin recent developments in the literature in the chosen area of research in Earth Science;
- 2
Synthesise and interpret the knowledge gained in the study of the underpinning research literature. This leads to the ability to identify gaps in current knowledge within the existing body of literature. The problem identified in this way should be suitable for original research;
- 3
Apply relevant methods to address complex research questions to advance our understanding of an existing problem or problems in Earth Science;
- 4
Communicate the findings and implications of original research in an effective professional written report and oral presentation.
