Overview
The unit covers the core topics in economic history, including but not limiting to the Neolithic revolution, the economy of the antiquity, the commercial revolution, the industrial revolution, the “Great Divergence,” as well as special topics on Australia and the Asia-Pacific Region. The organizing theme is to understand the historical process through which capitalism arose. Therefore, the unit employs an interdisciplinary approach, focussing on economics researches but also borrowing key insights from historical sociology.
