Overview

The unit introduces you to the basic element of Solid State Lighting technology, including it's role in energy consumption and in global climate change as well as possibilities in reduction of energy consumption. Topics include structure and working principle of Light Emitting Diode (LED), basics of optics and light-material interaction for lighting, lighting technology, radiometric and photometric measurements and units, effect of light in the built environment and for human well being, basics of color and human vision, measures for quality of light and lighting standards.

Laboratories cover light measurement, use of color standards and standard light sources, light spectrum measurements and defining the Color Rendering Index.

Learning outcomes

When you finish this unit, you should be able to:

  1. 1

Achieve theory-based competence relevant to solid state lighting (SSL) necessary to: + evaluate the interrelationship between: radiometry and photometry using the human visual system; colour perception and colour coordinates using colour spaces; light quality and light quality indices + discern LED structure, materials and types, analyse their electrical and thermal properties and assess benefits + design solid state lighting that conforms to a light spectrum specification. + LEDs Select drivers, controllers and sensor networks appropriately to incorporate intelligence in smart lighting systems

  2. 2

Assess the energy consumption of traditional and SSL-based lighting approaches

  3. 3

Design and construct a prototype system to solve a given complex engineering problem in the field of Intelligent lighting control using the knowledge of SSL and its applications

  4. 4

Conduct experiments to compute various quantities related to photometry, radiometry, colour quality and energy consumption of light sources

  5. 5

Critically assess the research literature in the field of solid state lighting and evaluate its applications
